Bob Hemsel sent in the following recollection of our grammar school days. In 1951, our 6th grade gym teacher, Joe Comba, formed The Columbus and Nathan Hale Basketball Cub League. Teams were named after our teachers and games were played on Satudray mornings in the Nathan Hale gym. Every boy who walked or rode his bike to the school played in a game. Results of the game were reported by Benny Zusman in the Carteret Press. WOW! After the games, if we had a few pennies, we'd go across the street to Maskaly's Sweet Shop for a bag of Penny Candy or a fountain drink. A block or more up towards "The Hill," there was another store (can't remember the name) that sold "Mello-Roll Ice Cream." YUM! Attached is a clipping of a Carteret Press story covering the games with the box scores. Bet those names look familiar. Click your mouse on Clipping to enlarge.
